How to Design a Kitchen You Love

Planning a kitchen remodel can be overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you successfully design a kitchen remodel? Here are the four most important steps to getting started.

Stop and think.

Does your current layout work? You may think it does, or you may not be sure. Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine if it’s time for a layout redesign:

  • How do you use the space? Do you have a large family to cook for? Do you entertain often? Do you need to accommodate multiple chefs simultaneously? Do you eat in the kitchen? Do the kids do their homework in the kitchen? Make a list of all the activities you use the space for.
  • When are you in the kitchen? The kitchen is actually one of the most-used rooms in our homes. Keep track of the times you spend in the kitchen.
  • Is your kitchen in a traffic pattern? Does your cooking zone overlap your cleaning zone? Do you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the laundry room or the garage? Would someone standing at the sink doing dishes prevent someone from getting from one room to another? Think about the floorplan of your kitchen and the adjacent areas of your home.

Once you’ve gone through and answered these questions, you should have a good idea of what the potential problems and needs of your kitchen design are. Make sure to write this information down and keep it somewhere handy. You’ll need it in a few steps.

Gather inspiration.

Sign up for a platform like Houzz or Pinterest and create a brand new project board specifically for this project. You can find great visual ideas for your kitchen remodel design, but you should also be on the lookout for how you want your kitchen to feel. Start by saving everything you like, then you can go back and edit through your board to find the ideas that you consider the most important for your kitchen. This doesn’t have to be a big board – approximately 30 pictures or ideas will be just right.

Prioritizing.

On a sheet of paper or a spreadsheet, make a list of everything you want to incorporate into your kitchen remodel design. Once you’ve written down everything you can think of, separate the items into ‘needs’ and ‘wants.’ From there, prioritize the items based on how important they are to you. Depending on your budget, you may not be able to have everything you want, but if you make a list of the most important things, we’ll be able to help make sure those ideas are incorporated into your kitchen remodel design.
